Portsmouth University adds smart grids and power electronics to its curriculum

More attractive study programme through practice-oriented content

Portsmouth University was granted university status in 1992, but its history dates back to the early 20th century as a municipal college. For the past twenty years, the university has been investing in all areas to make the campus and teaching more attractive to students. With this in mind, a call for tenders was issued for the Power Engineering and Machines and Drives departments, with Lucas-Nuelle GmbH coming out on top. Within six months, we delivered and commissioned two complete smart grid training systems, two transformer stations and two power electronic stations, equipped with Matlab.
The project was concluded with an extensive training session, during which the teachers were given a comprehensive insight into the functions and possibilities of the training systems. Overall, the quality of teaching in the relevant departments has been improved and the range of courses on offer has been expanded, enabling the university to attract new students.
„It was exciting to support Portsmouth University in the implementation of modern smart grid technologies. Our contribution has strengthened the quality of teaching and provides students with an attractive learning environment.“ (Dirk Schönian, Area Sales Manager at Lucas-Nuelle)
„Setting up our training systems and the training at Portsmouth University was a valuable experience. I am pleased that we were able to contribute to making teaching more sustainable with our technology.“ (Fabian Schwarz, Product Manager at Lucas-Nuelle)
